World War II Veterans to Save the Mall

World War II Veterans to Save the Mall formed in Spring 2000 to represent a voice for the millions of citizen soldiers who actually prosecuted that war and who oppose the location of the proposed World War II Memorial at the Rainbow Pool site on the National Mall. The World War II Veterans to Save the Mall does not want the destruction of the National Mall to be its legacy.

Genesis of the WWII Memorial

Organizing Principles

  1. The historic Rainbow Pool on the National Mall is the wrong site for the World War II Memorial. And the pending proposed for the WWII Memorial unnecessarily will damage the Mall, the symbol of what our generation fought and died to preserve.
  2. The proposed plan fails to live up to the promise made by Congress for a memorial and museum that will remind future generations about the civilian and military achievements during the 1940s.
  3. The misleading massive fund raising campaign by the memorial's sponsors fails to tell the truth about the WWII Memorial. Veterans have been kept in the dark. Would they accept it if they knew about the design?

Goals

  1. Save the National Mall and its magnificent symbols of our democracy -- the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument -- from being split apart and diminished in stature by a second-rate WWII memorial.
  2. Educate veterans -- and all Americans -- about the plan to deface the National Mall and the inadequate design concept for the WWII Memorial.
  3. Rally veterans nationwide to urge Congress to stop this process and start over and select a site that permits a monument and museum that truly honors the WWII generation.
