March 16, 2010
Dear Coalition Friends:
This Thursday, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts will review the latest revisions to the National Park Service proposed rehabilitation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and Grounds. This project is funded by the stimulus package. Because the project has been fast-tracked to meet funding deadlines, it is not included in the NPS National Mall Plan.
The project includes restoration of the leaky Pool, completion of security measures at the Memorial end of the Pool, addition of new accessible walkways, new walkways lining the length of the Pool where pedestrians have worn dirt paths, and a new water pumping and filtration building to pump Potomac River water to the Pool.
Controversial aspects of the project include the width (14 feet) and materials (hard paving instead of permeable) proposed by NPS for the walkways and the need for the large pumping structure (30 x 40 feet) south of the Reflecting Pool near the NPS stables.
When: Thursday, March 18th. The meeting starts at 10:00 A.M.
Where: Commission of Fine Arts, located in the National Building Museum, 401 F Street, NW, Suite 312
What: Agenda item C. National Park Service
