Dear Coalition Friends:
On December 2nd, the National Park Service will hold a public presentation on proposed actions to install permanent vehicle barriers and security monitoring at the Jefferson Memorial on the National Mall.
It has been five years since we've heard anything about plans to add permanent security at the Jefferson Memorial. In the meantime, for almost a decade the Memorial has been surrounded by ugly and obtrusive concrete jersey barriers. The re-start of the public consultation process is an opportunity for the public to learn what is being planned and provide comments.
Here are excerpts from the National Park Service notice:
Because there is a continuing desire to reduce the environmental impacts and to improve sensitivity to historic resources, the National Park Service is reconsidering design of a security system at the Jefferson Memorial and is re-initiating consultation and public comment. The type of vehicle barrier system will be determined in consultation with the Commission of Fine Arts, National Capital Planning Commission, the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Officer, and the public.
Please save the date December 2, 2009, and time 5:30-7:30 PM, for a presentation and discussion on the status of the proposed actions to install permanent vehicle barriers and security monitoring at the Jefferson Memorial and the potential effect on historic properties. The presentation will occur in Room M-09 at the Old Post Office Pavilion, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. Contact: Jane_Sikoryak@nps.gov
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
