Join us on Friday, October 24, 2008, to hear the authors of two important new books discuss their work. The authors also will take questions from the audience and will be available to autograph copies of the books.
Morning Session 11:00 AM
Step by Step: A Memoir of Hope, Friendship, Perseverance, and Living the American Dream
The program begins at 11:00 A.M. with author Bertie Bowman discussing his new autobiographypublished this summer by Random House. Mr. Bowman’s book tells the inspirational story of his journey from poverty as an African American child in the Jim Crow South to his current position as a top Senate staffer. During his remarkable career, which began as a 13-year-old janitor in the Capitol in 1944, he witnessed history as it was made from the death of FDR, through the end of World War II, Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, and Watergate. Following his talk and questions from the audience, Mr. Bowman will be available to autograph books.
Afternoon Session 1:00 PM
The National Mall: Rethinking Washington’s Monumental Core
Following a break for lunch, the afternoon session convenes at 1:00 PM for a panel discussion of The National Mall: Rethinking Washington’s Monumental Core, edited by Nathan Glazer and Cynthia R. Field, and published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. The panel discussion will feature the editors and contributors:
Nathan Glazer, professor emeritus of sociology and education at Harvard University
Cynthia R. Field, architectural historian emerita at the Smithsonian Institution
Judy Scott Feldman, president of the National Coalition to Save Our Mall
Richard Guy Wilson, professor of architectural history, University of Virginia (invited)
Catered Reception 3:30 PM
Following the panel discussion and questions from the audience, the authors will be available to sign copies of the book. A reception with light refreshments will conclude the afternoon’s program.

Books can be ordered from the Society at a 20% discount from the cover prices. The books may be picked up at the event and the authors will be available to sign them. Books will also be available at the event to be ordered by credit card only. These autographed books can either be shipped to you or picked up later at the Society’s offices. We cannot directly sell books in the Senate Office Building.
