Dear Friends:
We hope some of you will join us tomorrow, Saturday, at the Jefferson Memorial, 10 a.m., for our walking tour, "The National Mall: What the Memorials Don't Tell You." This is a test of ideas the National Coalition to Save Our Mall has been developing with our intern, Mark Butman, a student at George Washington University. The goal is to create the first of a series of self-guided Mall tours for the new nonprofit National Mall Conservancy -- http://www.nationalmallconservancy.org .
The theme we are developing in this tour is "I Have A Dream: The Struggle For Freedom in America," which takes Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech delivered on the Lincoln Memorial steps as the basis for an exploration of our nation's struggle for freedom: from Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence to George Mason and the Bill of Rights through FDR and the "Four Freedoms," the Korean War, and the Lincoln Memorial and Civil War, and the inscription there marking MLK's 1963 speech.
The tour will be led by Mark Butman and me. We'll have handouts and evaluation forms inviting your comments and critique.
This tour is one of the 80 walking/biking tours presented by Cultural Tourism DC's WalkingTown, DC Spring Edition (Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27). Click here and scroll down to read the full schedule.
