April 9, 2008
Dear Friends,
"The Role of the National Mall in DC's NEW "CENTER CITY" PLAN" is the subject of the next meeting of the Cleveland Park Citizens Association.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 10th, 6:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Park Library, 3310 Connecticut Avenue (at Macomb), NW. It is free and open to the public.
Speakers include: RICHARD H. BRADLEY, Exec. Dir. Downtown "BID" (Business Improvement District); JUDY SCOTT FELDMAN, PhD, Chair, National Coalition to Save Our Mall; PETER MAY, Assoc. Dir. for Lands, Resources and Planning, National Capital Regional National Park and PATRICIA ZINGSHEIM, Assoc. Dir. Revitalization & Design, DC Office of Planning and Program Mgr., Center City Action Agenda 2008.
Despite the economic slowdown, downtown Washington is humming, and city planners and groups such as the "Downtown BID" (Business Improvement District) are seeking ways to keep up the momentum. DC's "Center City Action Agenda 2008" targets the area north and south of the National Mall for major residential and commercial development.
This could become the next great economic engine for the city. With the National Mall at the heart of this area, the Mall's urgent need for coordinated planning, better access, parking and visitor improvements can no longer be ignored by city officials or the Congress. The National Coalition to Save Our Mall has called for a new "McMillan Commission" and a vision for an expanded, 21st Century Mall, serving tourists, residents and city growth. As the "new center city" emerges, two initiatives are underway: A National Mall Conservancy has been founded by the Coalition; and the National Park Service is developing a National Mall Plan for the next 50 years. Find out more on April 10, and voice your ideas on the future of Washington's downtown and the Mall.
