Friends,
A meeting of the National Capital Memorial Advisory
Commission will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, February 26, 1:30
p.m., at the National Building Museum, Room 312 (Offices of the Commission of Fine
Arts), 401 F Street, NW, Washington, DC.
This is the Commission
that reviews proposals for new memorials on the Mall and in DC and makes
recommendations to Congress about their appropriateness and
location. Membership on the Commission includes government agencies
but, notably, no citizen representative.
Commissioners
represent the National Park Service (Chairman), National Capital Planning
Commission, Architect of the Capitol, American Battle Monuments Commission
(sponsor of Korean Veterans and WWII Memorial), Commission of Fine Arts, Mayor
of DC, General Services Administration, and Secretary of Defense.
On the Agenda:
- 1. Legislation
currently under consideration by the 110th Congress, including
HR 3707, a
bill to authorize the establishment of a memorial to all victims of terrorism
HR 3935, to
extend the time limit of the authority of the Frederick Douglass Gardens, Inc.,
to establish a memorial and gardens on Department of the Interior (National
Park Service) land in DC
- 2.
Alternative Sites Study, Memorial to Victims of Ukraine Famine Genocide.
The meeting is open to
the public and public comment is accepted during deliberations.
