Dear Coalition
Friends:
On this President's
Day we offer you a few ideas for boning up on your historical knowledge and
understanding.
About the Lincoln Memorial: Public Radio's Studio 360 "American
Icons" series broadcast last week a program about the Lincoln Memorial
that you can listen to on podcast. The quote
that advertises the show gives the flavor of the conversation: "The
Lincoln Memorial is symbolic of America's promise. It is symbolic of
America's vision, but it's also symbolic of America's contradictions and
complexity." -- Prof. James Horton.
You can visit in
person or virtually Presidential homes in the Washington area:

The Lincoln Cottage at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in DC opens
to the public tomorrow, Tuesday, February 19th. The newly restored Lincoln Cottage was the First Family's seasonal retreat from
1862 to 1864. Two articles, in The Washington Post and The New York Times, tell of its importance and of the role of The National Trust for Historic
Preservation in saving it from
ruin and restoring it "as the premier historic site for public
education about Lincoln's presidency":
