Dear Coalition
Friends:
On March 31st the National Building Museum will be
hosting a program by architectural historian Judith Dupre,
author of "Monuments: America's History in Art & Memory." Her
book extensively covers monuments in DC and her presentation at the museum will
reflect that.
March 31
Monuments:
America's History in Art and Memory
Monday, 6:30 -
8:00 pm
Author and
architectural historian Judith Dupré presents a sweeping
tribute to American memorials that examines the reasons-political,
psychological, and emotional-for building them. Included are classic American
landmarks, such as the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Rushmore, and also
unconventional monuments that are changing the way we think about
commemoration-the AIDS Quilt, a traveling memorial made for the people by the
people, and the haunting lyrics of Bruce Springsteen's "Empty Sky,"
an intangible remembrance of September 11. Following the lecture, she
will sign copies of Monuments: America's History in Art and Memory (Random House).
This lecture is held
in conjunction with the exhibition Washington: Symbol and City,
which will be open for viewing.
