Reserve Now for Feb. 13 Overbeck Lecture: The Past and Future of the National Mall
On Tuesday evening, February 13th, Judy Scott Feldman will deliver an Overbeck History Lecture on how the National Mall has evolved from Pierre L'Enfant's original vision to its reality today and how it might look in the future.
L'Enfant considered the Mall the most important element of his plan for the capital, the nexus of federal and local life, but his concept was never really achieved. With an extensive series of historical images, Feldman will show that the Mall's history has been one of constant change, of L'Enfant's democratic idea ignored, deferred, replaced, and recast to suit changing needs. She will also raise some provocative questions about how the Mall might best meet the needs of the next hundred years.
Dr. Feldman is chair of the National Coalition to Save Our Mall, a nonprofit, all-volunteer citizens organization established in 2000 to protect and enhance the National Mall. A native Washingtonian and art historian, she taught at American University until 1999, when she left to spend full time on the Mall effort.
The lecture will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, at the Naval Lodge Hall at 330 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E. As usual, admission is free but a reservation is required due to limited seating.
