Dear Coalition Friends:
Happy New Year!
The Smithsonian Institution (SI) and the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) will be preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to assess the potential effects of constructing the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall, at a site selected by SI's Board of Regents in January 2006.
They will be soliciting public comments in a public scoping and information meeting on:
January 4, 2007
6 to 9 p.m.
National Music Center at the City Museum Building
801 K Street, NW (Mount Vernon Square)
Washington, DC
(For a map, go here)
The Mall site chosen for the Museum (despite the 2003 moratorium) is a five acre parcel at the foot of the Washington Monument and next to the National Museum of American History bounded by Constitution Avenue, Madison Drive, 14th and 15th Streets. You can see a map of the location (and the other sites that were rejected) at the Smithsonian's website.
If you cannot make the session, you can provide comments in writing to Jill Cavanaugh at the Louis Berger Group, In., 2445 M Street, NW, 4th Floor, Washington, DC 20037. Comments will also be collected at http://www.louisberger-nmaahceis.com or by emailing infor@louisberger-nmaahceis.com. Deadline for comments is February 4, 2007.
For those of you seeking to learn more about the project, and about the EIS and Section 106 consultation process, the Louis Berger website provides useful information.
See you there.
