Other Memorial and Museum Proposals

Several memorial and museum projects proposed for the Mall in recent decades will further encroach on the Mall's limited public open space. Some were approved before the Coalition was founded and we have not taken positions on them. These include the Black Revolutionary War Patriots Memorial to be located in Constitution Gardens and the Martin Luther King Jr. approved for a site on the Tidal Basin. We strongly support the concept of these memorials. We will carefully follow the development of designs and do our part to ensure that they preserve insofar as is possible the integrity of the Mall.

The Smithsonian is currently reviewing sites for the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. We support the current Congressional moratorium and so are opposed to the site at 14th and Constitution Ave. next to the American History Museum. We support reuse of the Arts and Industries Building if it can be appropriately refitted for an inviting museum. We believe that the Banneker Overlook site, at the south end of L'Enfant Plaza and in line with the Smithsonian Castle, offers the greatest opportunity. That site could also be the threshold to a new, exciting "Third Century Mall." See more about this concept at http://www.nationalmall.net
