Sept. 11 Memorial Planned for D.C.
Associated Press The District will soon have a permanent living memorial for the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The city along with federal agencies announced this morning the creation of a series of memorial tree groves on Kingman Island in the Anacostia River just east of R-F-K Stadium. D-C Mayor Tony Williams says it will be a place of great solitude where citizens and visitors to Washington can reflect on the events of September 11th. Williams says it will also serve as a reminder of how our lives and country were forever changed. The memorial will have one central and eight ward-based neighborhood memorial tree groves, as well as several individual tree plantings honoring those whose lives were lost. When the effort is completed over the next decade it will consist of three-thousand trees. The trees are being provided through a combination of local donations and federal reforestation efforts. © 2002 The Associated Press |
