MILLION MOM MARCH

By Richard Pugh

On May 14, 2000, Mother's Day, an estimated crowd of 500,000 gathered for the Million Mom March on the National Mall to foster handgun violence awareness. The March was centered on the 4th Street grounds of the Mall, with the Capitol Building as a dramatic backdrop.

Speakers included celebrities Rosie O'Donnell and Susan Sarandon, political leaders Hillary Rodham Clinton and Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, as well as mothers and grandmothers who lost children to gun violence. The March, organized after the massacre at Columbine High School, where 14 students and 1 teacher were killed, called for stricter handgun laws.

The Mall's commanding position as the Capitol's "front yard" allowed the marchers to gain the attention of lawmakers and the entire American public. (R.P)
