Martin Luther King Memorial

Martin Luther KingCongress has authorized construction of a memorial to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall but the effort is stalled because the memorial foundation has been unable to reach agreement with the King family.

The memorial would be built on a four-acre Tidal Basin site in the sightline of the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials. The site was dedicated in 2000 and, by law, the foundation has until Dec. 12, 2003, to raise the $100 million to build the memorial.

Congress voted in June 1998 to authorize a Mall location for the memorial. The Tidal Basin site was approved by several federal commissions in December 1999.

The proposed design features a figure of King emerging from a rough-hewn boulder in a landscape of large stones, flowing water and cheery trees.

Rev. King's widow, Coretta Scott King, has called the design "uniquely beautiful and meaningful" but the King National Memorial Project Foundation has yet to reach agreement with the family. Most potential large donors have been holding off until the negotiations are concluded.
