Security Plan for the Mall

On July 11th, the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) released for public comment its Security Plan for Washington's Monumental Core and the Mall, developed under the leadership of Commissioner Richard Friedman. We welcome this attempt to establish design guidelines for replacing the ugly barriers and walls now encircling Washington's monuments and streets will be replaced by more attractive security measures.

Of particular interest to the National Coalition, the Plan includes plans for the National Mall, including the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, though not for the Washington Monument, which is a separate (and highly controversial) project.

The public has 60 days to offer comments. (THE NATIONAL COALITION IS ASKING NCPC TO EXTEND THE DEADLINE AN ADDITIONAL 60 DAYS, SINCE MOST ORGANIZATIONS TAKE AN AUGUST RECESS AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESPOND BY SEPTEMBER 11.) We encourage individuals and organizations to make comments to NCPC.

You can read the press release and gain access to the full study online at www.ncpc.gov/what.html.
