Dear Coalition Friends:
The National Mall now has large areas with free wireless internet, as reported below. Coverage includes the eastern portions of the National Mall managed by the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, and the Department of Agriculture. The Smithsonian already had wireless at some of its outdoor spaces, so this broadens coverage. No word on any future expansion to include the western portions of the Mall under National Park Service jurisdiction.
A list of the District's wi-fi hotspotscan be found online.

WASHINGTON - Free wireless Internet access has been added to the National Mall by the local government and its federal partners.
Officials said Wednesday that the latest expansion of Washington's free Internet initiative covers the mall from 3rd Street to 14th Street. The city has installed 220 free Wi-Fi hotspots that are accessible by any compatible computer or device. The network is called D.C. Wi-Fi.
The D.C. government installed the hotspots in collaboration with federal partners, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Smithsonian Institution. The private company Cisco donated the network hardware, and Level 3 donated the Internet services.
City officials say the free Wi-Fi will improve the National Mall for both residents and tourists visiting the many museums and memorials.

Visitors to the Mall can power up their computers for the first time, now that outdoor "hotspots" cover the area from Third Street on the east side to 14th Street on the west. The Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art also are connected.
The announcement Wednesday by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsackand D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is part of the city's initiative to expand free wireless access throughout the District. Network hardware for the mall project was donated by Cisco, and Internet service by Level 3.
"The Internet is now integral to our everyday lives, and this free resource will provide USDA employees, guests and the visiting public another means of staying connected," Vilsack said in a statement. WiFi is available around the clock.
