The Washington Monument reimagined

Dear Coalition Friends:

This is the latest from the National Ideas Competition for the Washington Monument Grounds:

Below please find a Washington Post article related to the six winners of the National Ideas Competition for the Washington Monument Grounds. A full-page spread in Sunday's Post also included illustrations of the winning concepts and statements by the winners describing their ideas. You can see those by clicking on the winning titles.

In addition, three finalists are currently included in the National Building Museum’s “Unbuilt Washington” exhibit. In the spring of 2012, the Virginia Center for Architecture will have a comprehensive exhibit featuring the competition which will coincide with the selection of the People’s Choice. The Washington Monument reimagined

November 25, 2011

How would you change the Washington Monument grounds?

Since 2010, a group of historians, architects, professors and others interested in starting a dialogue about the underused expanse at the heart of the Mall launched a National Ideas Competition to generate answers to that question. In July, a jury picked six finalists, and now the public is being asked to choose two “People’s Choice” favorites.

This week, The Post’s Local Opinions page asked all the finalists to describe their vision for the area in 200 words or fewer. Click on the links below to see an image from their proposals and to read what they had to say.

“Arcs of Shade” by Stephen Lederach.

“You and Me” by Jinwoo Lim.

“Field of Stars” by Catherine Peek.

“The People’s Forum” by Karolina Kawiaka.

“Monument of Unity” by Jacques Prins, Kevin Battarbee and Egidijus Kasakaitis.

“An Inclined Plane” by Julian Hunt, Lucrecia Laudi, Monling Lee and Miguel Angel Maldonado.
