Dear Congress(wo)man …………:

The National Mall is the world’s foremost symbol of freedom and democracy. It is the nation’s unique public open space for celebrations, commemorations, and recreation. However, visitors coming to Washington are finding the Mall and its monuments closed off in the name of security.

I urge you and all members of Congress to immediately investigate who is responsible for the state of the Mall. Congress must take action to restore the Mall’s historic open character. A citizens group that has been working on these issues has an informative website: http://www.savethemall.org.

As spring quickly approaches and Americans make plans to bring their families to the Mall, the Mall should reflect the essential openness of our free society.

Sincerely,
